LEST! YOU DID NOT KNOW? – By Charles Schokman Have you ever wondered where the month of August got its name from? August, the eighth month of our calendar year, was named in honor of the Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar. The original Roman calendar, which consisted of ten months, began with March and ended with December. However, during the reign of Julius Caesar, changes were made to the Roman calendar in order to align it with the solar year. These changes included the introduction of two new months, July and August. After Julius Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, his adopted son and heir, Gaius Octavius, came to power. Octavius later changed his name to Augustus Caesar, officially becoming the first Roman emperor. To commemorate his numerous accomplishments and to maintain harmony with the naming of the previous month (July, named after Julius Caesar), Augustus Caesar requested that the month then known ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Kris Kristofferson Why Me Lord Story Told – By Charles Schokman “Why Me” was recorded by Kristofferson in 1972, featuring backing vocals by soon-to-be wife Rita Coolidge and up-and-coming singer-songwriter Larry Gatlin. It was released on the album Jesus Was a Capricorn in 1973, and became the biggest hit of his career.   According to country music historian Bill Malone, Kristofferson wrote the song during an emotionally low period of his life after having attended a religious service conducted by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow. Malone wrote, “‘Why Me, Lord'” – as the song is sometimes known – “may seem greatly out of character for Kristofferson, but it can be interpreted as his own personal religious rephrasing of ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down.’ In this case, he is ‘coming down’ not from drugs, but from the whole hedonistic euphoria of the (1960s).” Malone described Kristofferson’s gruff vocal styling ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Your grace is sufficient for me – by Charles Schokman “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.—-2 Corinthians 12:9(ESV) Verse Thoughts Paul was doing a great work for the Lord, but God knows the heart of all men and He knew that Paul could become puffed up with pride due to the great revelations that God was giving to the Church through him. The mysteries that Paul was being shown, had been kept hidden for ages and generations but now were being revealed to the saints of God – through Paul. No wonder the Lord gave Paul a thorn in the flesh, which caused him to be tried and tested, beaten and buffeted to the extreme ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – There is peace in Christ – by Charles Schokman “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”—John 14:27 The message of John 14:27 is a promise of eternal peace to all believers in the midst of troubles. Peace as described by most people is a state of freedom of the mind from anxieties, troubles, and worries that may confront us at any time in life. This is actually what it is when we talk about the peace that a man can give to you. This kind of peace is temporary and can last until another trouble sets in. John chapter 14 verse 27 talks about God’s kind of peace. The peace that remains in you forever irrespective of your situation. It quenches every ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – NO NEVER ALONE – by Charles Schokman God never promised it would be easy, But He did promise we would Never Be Alone. God never gave us a road map. Never gave us a how-to-manual, a list of instructions, a set of definite plans. Never said He’d monitor our every footstep, our every decision, our every turn. He never said He’d control us to the point that we couldn’t take steps on our own. Never promised all carefree days, without any struggle or pain.   But what He did promise was His son’s sacrifice for us—a promise that no matter what we faced, no matter what fear may cloud our minds, no matter where we go or how far we wander from His loving arms—we will never be alone. God never promised it would be easy. He never said that our days would be open and filled with light and ...
