SUNDAY CHOICE- Our Hearts Always Hunger For – sent by Charles Schokman “And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace!” – Isaiah 9:6 The prophet Isaiah describes the coming Messiah above with these words, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace!” Jesus is the embodiment and fulfillment of this prophecy. He is the most wonderful counselor. He is sympathetic to our weaknesses and so understanding of our failings and fallings. Jesus invites us “to approach [his] throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16). Do you need mercy and grace and peace this morning? “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Isaiah calls the Messiah (Jesus) Mighty God and Everlasting Father. Jesus, in essence, declared Himself to be God ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – What A Friend We Have in Jesus (sent to eLanka by Charles Schokman) HYMN HISTORY: Irish born Joseph M. Scriven (1819-1896) was 25 years old, in love and to be married. The day before his wedding his fiance died in a tragic drowning accident. Heartbroken, Joseph sailed from his homeland to start a new life in Canada. While in Canada working as a teacher, he fell in love again and became engaged to Eliza Roche, a relative of one of his students. Once again, Joseph’s hopes and dreams were shattered when Eliza became ill and died before the wedding could take place. Although one can only imagine the turmoil within this young man, history tells us that his faith in God sustained him. Soon after Eliza’s death Joseph joined the Plymouth Brethren and began preaching for a Baptist church. He never married, but spent the remainder of his ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – PRAYING FOR OTHERS – by Charles Schokman There is a misconception that only certain people are called or gifted to be intercessory prayer warriors. There are people in our churches and our lives who seem to have that special intimate connection with God. They are relentless when it comes to praying for others. The truth is we are all called to pray for others. In Ezekiel 22:30, God is searching for those who would stand in the gap, to intercede for others. The invitation is for all Christians to serve through intercessory prayer. Praying for others is not a choice; it is our privilege.  Whether we believe it or not, we are all equipped to be prayer warriors on behalf of others. We are heirs with Christ. We are adopted sons and daughters and therefore possess the same power and access to God that our Saviour enjoys. We can whisper, or cry out, ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – How Great Thou Art – In any language, the emotions come through…..   Let’s join in the singing with shouts of acclamation and proclaim with one accord “How Great Thou Art” in this year 2023.   How Great Thou Art Oh Lord, my God When I, in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art And when I think that God, His Son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin Then sings my soul, my Savior God ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – A thought for the New Year—2023 – By : Charles Schokman But they that wait upon the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; They shall walk, and not faint. Teach me LORD, teach me LORD to wait.–Isaiah 40:31 King James Version What does it mean to wait on the Lord?    I believe it’s another way of saying that we trust God. We trust him, as Lord in Heaven, who is in control of everything, to guard our life. The promise that in Isaiah 40:31 is beautiful.  I love the imagery of my strength being renewed.  Eagles wings, running without getting tired…I’ll take it all! It’s important to distinguish the difference, though, between having our strength renewed and getting everything we want (our goals, desires or everything we ask for in prayer). When we wait ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – WHAT AM I LIVING FOR? – by Charles Schokman “If life ever brings you to a place where it challenges you with the question “What are you living for?” The answer is simple. Maybe you’ve had a bad day or a bad week or thoughts have been ceaselessly circling your mind. Regardless, if 100 things don’t automatically pop into your mind, think of it this way: Who am I living for? It’s impossible to know the significance of the innumerable lives you have touched. But just think of all the people you’ve crossed paths with in this life, you’ll never know just how much you meant to each and every one of them. Your relatives, yes, all of them. Your friends, every one between the best ones and the ones who didn’t last. Your significant other. All your coworkers at all the jobs you’ve worked. The neighbors you’ve lived ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – The Parable of the Porcupine – by Charles Schokman “It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions.  After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen.  So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth.  Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the warmth that came from the others. This way they were able to survive.   Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Lovely singing from Africa – Abide with me The dictionary definition of abide has several uses of the verb: “to remain; continue; stay”, “to have one’s abode; dwell; reside”, “to put up with; tolerate”, “to endure, sustain, or withstand without yielding or submitting”, and “to wait for; await”.  In the Bible, the word takes on a greater intimacy, and is often used to show the need to rely on the Lord in every aspect of one’s life. So abiding is about being in a place where one remains close, where a relationship is sustained, and there can be an element of waiting as well.  The sense of dwelling and enduring is one that is seen often in the Bible as well. There is also an element of not abiding with sin or the sinful in the Bible as well. There are many places in the Bible where one ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – What does it mean, “Whatever it takes” “Making the Word of God a routine part of your life will transform your heart, renew your mind, refresh your soul, and give you divine direction for your life. We encourage you to make it a part of your daily life. We know that when you do, you will begin to see the evidence of God’s presence, voice and activity in your life increase like never before! Commitment to Christ means taking up your cross daily, giving up your hopes, dreams, possessions, even your very life if need be for the cause of Christ. Only if you willingly take up your cross may you be called His disciple (Luke 14:27). The reward is worth the price. Jesus followed His call of death to self (“Take up your cross and follow Me”) with the gift of life in Christ: “For whoever wants to ...
