India wins despite Dasun Shanaka’s century effort Source:-Dailynews India recorded a comprehensive 67-run win over the touring Sri Lankan side in the 1 st game of 3 match ODI series in Rajkot. Sri Lanka who won the toss and opted to bowl first had no clue whatsoever in their bowling effort where India’s batters easily dominated the Sri Lankan bowling attack and cruised easily throughout the whole inning. Almost the whole Indian top order made some statement innings where openers Rohit Sharma and Subman Gill scored hefty half-centuries to set up the tone for their star batter Virat Kohli to come and score a fine century for India to post a mammoth 373 runs for a loss of 7 wickets. In the reply, Sri Lanka got on to the worst start possible where Avishka Fernando who made a comeback to the national side fell for 5 runs and followed up ...

Remembering the Legend Desmond De Silva…   It seems like only yesterday but it’s been a year since the musical Legend Desmond De Silva left us so suddenly.  January 9th marks his first death anniversary.   His wife Phyllis says.. “I still can’t believe he is gone!  We were watching the Test Match together the previous afternoon….he was totally relaxed and making the usual comments as armchair cricketers do.  We teased each other as we backed rival teams.  Little did I know what the next day will bring forth.  It is as if he just switched off a light… he was gone!” 12 months later we are all feeling his loss.  Family, friends and fans still find it unbelievable.  He was so full of life!  He had charm & charisma…. He lit up the stage! His warm personality touched many lives … not just through his music but that he took time to mentor fellow musicians, to reach out ...

An Inspirational Message for the New Year 2023 Speech by Pope Francis on Wednesday 4th January 2023. Worth a read regardless of your faith You can have flaws, be anxious, and even be angry, but do not forget that your life is the greatest enterprise in the world. Only you can stop it from going bust. Many appreciate you, admire you and love you. Remember that to be happy is not to have a sky without a storm, a road without accidents, work without fatigue, relationships without disappointments. To be happy is to find strength in forgiveness, hope in battles, security in the stage of fear, love in discord. It is not only to enjoy the smile, but also to reflect on the sadness. It is not only to celebrate the successes, but to learn lessons from the failures. It is not only to feel happy with the applause, but to be happy in anonymity. Being happy ...

A tribute to my parents-by Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha Sam Wijesinha Source:Dailynews It may seem parochial to write a column about my parents, but I was moved to do this by a fascinating discussion I had on Christmas Eve with Dharmasiri Peiris, whom I had not seen for many years. I realized that writing about what I did, or tried to do, with him, given his outstanding career as a Civil Servant, practically the last of them, would also be of interest. But today I shall concentrate on a train of thought he roused when, almost as soon as we were together, he recalled my parents whom he said he had hugely admired. As we spoke about them, we registered how perhaps as a couple they were unique, in having in their separate ways had such positive impact on so many people, while having both contributed so productively to public life. ...

Shanaka dazzles in a losing effort. Sri Lanka fall in first one-dayer – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka continues his purple patch with the bat but his unbeaten century in a losing effort underlined the inconsistency of his team. When the bowlers produce great economy the batters let them down. This time it was the opposite as the fully represented Indian batting sent them on a leather hunt after being invited to bat first.  Chasing 373 was a daunting target from the outset. But the Sri Lanka batters for once took on the challenge but fell short by 67 runs. Shanaka has been widely and unfairly criticised for his leadership in the shorter formats. But the purists fail to see or acknowledge his success rate which has been the best since the days of their great leaders of the past,  Mahela Jayawardena ...

“SOUND PAPAL ADVICE” – By Desmond Kelly.   Sent to us by Chris Lawton, via Keith Bennett, is this sound Papal advice, delivered by Pope Francis, himself, early in the New Year of 2023. This Pope chose to go under the name of Francis, although his real name happens to be Jorge Mario Bergoglio, simply because he, like a lot of us, loves animals, and the renowned name of the holy Saint of the Carholic Church, Saint Francis of Azzizi went to the extent of actually  talking with the animals who came his way, and whats more, they understood him. Without further ado,let us now go straight to Pope Francis & the wise, wonderful speech he afforded us with which, to start the New Year,  not forgetting both Chris. & Keith, for forwarding it to e’Lanka.  Now, I would join Pope Francis in saying may God bless everyone out there. Desmond ...

Kerrigan La-Brooy – Lead Me Back Home Written by Jacqueline Kellock from Canada, here is a short review: “This is a powerful song, guaranteed to pull at the heartstrings of all those who hear it, leaving a haunting presence and an irresistible desire to listen to it over and over again. It’s perfect for anyone who feels that life has lost its meaning and for those who are looking for a way back home – or even for those who know of such a person. The melody is catchy, the lyrics are touching, the vocals are captivating and the meaning is compelling.”    LEAD ME BACK HOME – IN THE NAME OF THY FATHER                      IN THE NAME OF THY-SON AND OF THY HOLY SPI-RIT YES YOU ALL ARE BUT ONE   PLEASE TAKE ME BACK, JESUS PLEASE LEAD ME BACK HOME MY ROAD HAS BEEN LONG, LORD SINCE I HAVE ...
