Valentine’s day at the Grand on Princes – By Trevine Rodrigo It was a night about, love, loving that special one, and music that creates the mood. Valentine’s day at the Grand on Princes delivered just that as Corrine Almeida and Ebony and Stan Azzopardi with Stex, comprising Lex Pirotta and Denis Bugat belted out some fantastic songs to suit the occasion. Esric Jackson joined the celebration with his own rendition of Country favourites that has been his trademark over many decades. Corrine was in scintillating form as the veteran of Sri Lanka music showcased why she has been on top of her game over a long successful journey in music. Personally, Valentine’s day should be every day, if you love someone. That’s my personal perspective. But the special day dedicated to it, (February 14) each year brings out the romantic in most couples and also delivers a reason for ...

Valentine’s Day celebrations in Kandy – By Dr harold Gunatillake Web : doctorharold.com Gifts of flowers or a single red rose are sent with romantic messages to loved ones, and couples spend particular time together. Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day with dinner, a picnic or a special home-cooked meal. Tourists and locals expressed their love for their partners by celebrating in restaurants and hotels in Kandy. My wife and I thought that the best site and the best-friendly restaurant to celebrate valentine’s Day in Kandy would be Senani by Oak Ray restaurant in Kandy, overlooking a beautiful panorama of the lake and the city centre. Senani Restaurant is a rooftop dining area that offers a bird’s eye view of the charming city of Kandy alongside delicious culinary options. We were ecstatic and thrilled that the restaurant was packed with tourists and local couples and just managed to creep into a table. ...

THE POWER OF LOVE – by Joe Van Langenberg It’s Valentine’s Day, which means there’s no better time for all the die-hard romantics to remind each other, how strong their feelings & respect for one another have been & will hopefully continue to be, though hell should bar the way. When life can be a drag at times, steadfast commitment can be the catalyst for couples, (irrespective of gender) to take each other for what they really are & not what they would expect them to be; as remorseless time grinds on, bringing in its wake, not only heartache, tears & fears, but also laughter & confidence in one another; vital requisites to guide them through the difficult times. The seven stages of our earthly sojourn comprises the good, bad & the downright ugly. Sometimes, we lose the will to carry on when the chips are down. But that’s the ...

“MORE PONDERISMS” – by Des Kelly With my apologies to those who have pondered these ponderisms before, I did ponder on whether to publish these particular “beauties” on e’Lanka again and decided to do so simply because the ponderous pharaphaneliya (yes, I ponder and/or wonder if I have spelt that right), that Keith Bennett sends us from time to time is primarily important for the poshest website (in simple English), in Australia. Also gives me the chance, immediately after Valentine’s day, this year, to dedicate a wonderful song, to whom it may concern, tying in with the above ponderisms. This is how I like them and here’s hoping our wonderful readers will enjoy both the poetic song and the subject as stated above.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. Pondering Ponderisms  Why do peanuts float in a regular coke and sink in a diet coke. Go ahead and try it.  I ...

Valentine’s Day in the light of Christian admonishment on Love – by Oscar E V Fernando Valentine’s Day-VD-originated as a Christian feast of the early Church but later this was coined by folk traditions and now remains a cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world-especially of the Christian tradition. So is the meaning of VD described loosely on Google.   It is the writer’s opinion that over the long span of years of Christianity, some adherents have continued to believe in the original teachings of creation and love namely-that a human being was created in the image and likeness of the Creator and that the Creator is the very essence of Love-and some have swayed away from these traditional and Faith Filled beliefs mainly in the Creator and that of VD itself and society finds itself turmoiled in thought-word and deed!    ...

Vale Olga Ramasamy – A Tribute – By Trevine Rodrigo Tribute:  The following is an abridged version of the eulogy given by Olga’s daughter Dhulani Muthu-Krishna  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house (Matthew 5:15). A tribute to Olga Ramasamy (OAM) – Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunty, a good friend to all and above all, an elegant Lady.  On 22nd April she was taken away from us to receive her well-earned rewards in heaven, but the lamp that she lit on earth and the example she set for others to follow, will live on forever in life and in our hearts. Just ‘Olga’ to many, many people and ‘Mum or Mummy’ to us, she was always an elegant lady who went about her business with quiet confidence and strength.  ...

“AN ALPINE LOVE AFFAIRE” By Des Kelly Another Valentine’s day has just been and gone. For true lovers however, I feel that every day, should really be celebrated in the same way. This day is generally connected with Saint Valentine, but also, in a different context, to Film Actor Rudolph Valentino, famous, not only for his acting, but also for his love affairs (and the techniques, involved), plus his good looks.  Rudolph Valentino was reputed to be one of the most handsome  men of his era. Unfortunately, this era was short-lived, as he died of Peritonitis at the age of 31. To this day, on the anniversary of his death on the 23rd August, each year, an unidentified woman dressed in black, places a single red rose at the tomb of Rudolph Valentino.           Getting back to “Valentine’s Day”, especially for the good readers of eLanka, ...
