DESMOND KELLY

“QUOTABLE QUOTES” – By Des Kelly   Above, is something in the English Language that has always interested me. Exactly as the fact that a “song” is simply “a condensed story”, quotes, as Samuel Beckett one wrote, are simply “wise words, witty words, weird words, written and spoken by the famous and the fashionable, over the last few decades”. Always interesting, they make for quick uncluttered reading, and while I intend writing some of the best, for our members and readers of eLanka, let us start with some “truisms” below, to whet your appetite. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)–eLanka.   Truisms -If I had a dollar for every girl that found me unattractive, they’d eventually find me attractive. -I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom, until they’re flashing behind you. -Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards ...

“THEREIN, A THEREMIN” – By Des Kelly I Don’t even need an introduction to this one. The music, more specifically, “O SOLO MIO” (My Sunshine) written in 1898, (38 years before I was born), was then taken by LeonTheremin, who, because he could not sing, and probably ha a few fingers missing, as well, decided to invent this thing in 1920, that you don’t need any fingers, to play. The “Instrument” is a simple rectangular little box-like structure, that has to be “switched-on” electronically, I suppose, although I wonder about this technology back in  1920, and then, how the chords are played with the left fingerless hand, I’ll never know, but the right hand of this  lovely young lass, had her fingers moving in accordance with the music, while still about a foot OVER the instrument, as you will see. BECAUSE Seeing is believing, my eLanka readers & ...

“AUSTRALIA, FOR YOU” -by Des Kelly  The Country to which everyone wants to come, it seems, not just to visit, but to make it their “home”. The reason, normally given, is that it is “The lucky Country”, and looking at it from various angles, it certainly is. I am the first to admit, that although I wasn’t too happy about leaving ” My lovely Island Home”, as I call her (Countries & Ships are generally referred to, in the feminine gender), I appreciated the fact that we would soon be calling Australia home.,      This particular little “story” however, is just about a hitchiker’s guide to this great brown sunburnt Land. I found it interesting enough to pass onto our readers of eLanka, and I feel sure that all of you good people will enjoy it too.   Desmond Kelly.          (Editor-in- Chief) eLanka ...

“BURGHERS IN BREXIT-LAND” – By Des Kelly    Burghers In The UK – http://www.burghersuk.com/ Yes, folks, the old Burghers of Ceylon, now merit their own “theme-song” based on a past Country & Western “hit” that I have edited especially for the purpose. To put it in a nutshell, “We’ve been everywhere folks, we’ve been everywhere, across the desert sands folks, up in the mountain air, of trouble, we’ve had our share folks, we’ve been everywhere. Burghers, or “Citizens of a Burgh”, one of the tiniest minorities of Ceylon, as we knew it, most of us were well and truly “shafted”, and had to reluctantly leave our Motherland after the “Sinhala-only” policy was brought in by a Government who still had a lot to learn, and so, Ceylon’s loss was most certainly the gain of Countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States of America, and, of course, England, which this particular story ...

“LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING” – By Des Kelly A beautiful “old” song, which I will “feature” as the background of this most interesting “story” dealing with the fact that, even as you read it, you will be getting older and wiser, hopefully, yet, if you read this, I have no doubt that you will enjoy the content. Enough said. Please enjoy the article. By Des Kelly Edito-In-Chief eLanka   *The Sky Gets Dark, Slowly*   Mao Dun literary prize winner Zhou Daxin’s latest novel to be published, “The Sky Gets Dark, Slowly”, is a sensitive exploration of old age and the complex, hidden emotional worlds of the elderly in a  rapidly ageing population. In it he writes, “…Many elderly speak as though they know everything, but of old age they are in fact as ignorant as children. Many elderly are in fact, completely unprepared for what they are ...

“SKY-SCRAPER SONG, OF HONG KONG” – By Des Kelly  True, there has been a lot of unnecessary strife recently, on the Streets of Hong Kong, but then, what’s new ?. Seems to be happening everywhere at the moment. Adults, teenagers, and even young children are presently taking to the Streets around the World, protesting about one thing or another, the favourite subject being “Climate Change”. It is not impossible to see that the adults want changes that, in my opinion, will make Earth a better place to live in, and as long as these are peaceful protests, maybe this would be the best way to achieve the necessary results, but, in trying to solve one problem, especially in the case of young children, out comes another. The children are now rapidly coming into what I would call a  “fear-complex”. They are now fearing that our World is rapidly coming to ...

“SHE’S XI JINPING & SHE CAN SING” Is there ANYTHING that the Chinese CANNOT DO ??. Forget about their “Trade-Wars”, forget about Thousands of Chinese Military Men marching as ONE, forget about the fact that THEY can supply ANYBODY with ANYTHING they want, faster & cheaper than ANYONE else can, simply because of their mammoth Population/Workforce, who labour on a pay-scale at least 75% lower than most other Western Countries, forget about the South China Seas, and how much of that Ocean BELONGS to them, forget about the fact that part of their belongings now include the little Suburb of Hambanthota, in Sri Lanka, & who knows, where else ?, forget about CHINA, altogether, and focus on this young, pretty Chinese lass, the daughter of the present President Ping, a girl who can really SING, & I can certainly vouch for that, having heard this present recording, sent to ...

“THE SALT OF THE EARTH” – By Des Kelly     Everyone knows that too much salt is not good for human consumption, and yet, food without salt is not only bland, it is tasteless as well. However, this little article is not primarily about salt-consumption, it is more about comparison rather than consumption, showing us that little things come in much more attractive packages.       We just put up with a sprinkle of the stuff, the the great Mahatma Gandhi had a lot more to do with, in his day (but that is another story). I do think however, that Aussies do love, and use much more salt than even the Sri Lankans do. When I first came to Australia, I was amazed at the amount of salt(mainly),used at their famous bbq’s. Not much pepper, because spices in general were unheard of, until us, Asians migrated to ...

“THE WHIPS ARE OUT” – By Des Kelly   The BEST news that we, in Australia have heard in  a long time. Whips will no longer be allowed to be used on all racehorses in this Country. Jockeys will ride these magnificent animals minus these whips, which, although they are not items of the  torture we understand them to be, still gives the “Sport of Kings” a very bad look indeed.      Personally, I cannot wait to see this legislation come into the Horse-racing Industry. After the shocking treatment of these beautiful animals who always try  their hearts out to make their owners wealthy, the fact is that some of them have been discarded by these “heartless humans” who do not seem to give a damn about what happens to them when they cannot race anymore.     Once they cannot make money like they used to, ...

“UNITED, WE STAND, DIVIDED, WE FALL” – By Des Kelly  Once again, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, an English phrase comes into being, this time, in reference to a Country that I have always been very proud to call “Home”, an Island that certainly WAS a “Tourist Paradise”, now, in real life, a tear in the Indian Ocean. Because of the recent turmoil, actual tears are being shed by ordinary folk like Mary Fernando and Jilan Rajitha & many others who are feeling the pinch that the obvious lack of tourists produce. These are the people that get my full sympathy, because “tourism” in general, was what helped them to live a contented life and put some simple food on the table for their families and loved ones.      The “Article” that follows, tells the story, so I will not go into details about it. With th new Elections almost ...
