DESMOND KELLY

“HAVE FAITH IN PERCY” – By Des Kelly “If music be the food of love, play on”. What an extraordinarily beautiful phrase ?, one of my favourites, because, as I always say, good music is the ONE ingredient that could turn a gloomy day into a bright one, an unhappy individual into someone with a new hope, in other words, a frown into a smile, and so the list goes on. Of course, this will depend on the MUSIC that IS “the food of love”!. The days of “gourmet” music are unfortunately few and far between, nowadays, my friends. Loud, raucous, “so-called” music, blasted out, electronically, more often, than not, now seems to be the flavour of the present era. As it was, in Africa, eons ago, when music was simply a means of contacting each other, via the beating of drums, (wooden clubs on-tree, style), in order to plan ...

“OUR SOULS”, IN SRI LANKA” – By Des Kelly I am sick to death, about it, so I have decided to write this little piece on behalf of all the Lankan/Aussie Burgher- buggers who were forced to leave the little Island of Ceylon, for one reason or another. Some of these people may not agree with me, but that is their prerogative. I am also, not only “mad”, but totally “disturbed” about the fact that the present “Constitutional-Crisis” taking place, over there, does not seem to be in the least bit, newsworthyover here, in Oz. I do not give a damn about these crises.Bad news is abundant everywhere in the World, but, we, “Belittled-Burghers” (myself, for instance), like to be kept informed about what is happening in “Our Country”(after all, we were born there, too). After having watched “Aunty A.B.C.”, “Uncle S.B.S”, and even “2nd Cousins” “The Sri Lanka Morning ...

“THE LAST POST” By Des Kelly   An extremely interesting “story” regarding the above, came to my attention via Valerie Weerakoon, recently. Merril Aluwihara, in England has written this article, expressing a wish that it be “passed on” to the public, and, to fulfil his wish, I decided to e’mail Merril and inform him that I would do so, crediting him as the author of the piece, but, at the same time, using my own method of transferring the work, including the addition of “music” to whatever story I find interesting, only to make it even MORE interesting to thousands of our eLanka readers on-line, around the World. It has been over a week now. I still have not heard from Merril, so decided to “pass his story on” as he wished. Being a former member of the Royal Ceylon Navy, myself, I did know some of the facts behind ...

“A ROYAL SALUTE” – By Des Kelly It wasn’t too long ago when Australia was seriously considering the fact of becoming a Republic. What did we need a “Queen” for ?, who needs a Governer-General acting on behalf of the Queen, Australia could have it’s own, etc., etc., the Republicans were on a “Roll”, but, speaking for myself, as I always do, the only roll that I prefer is the “party-sausage-roll” I have for lunch, sometimes. I have made it abundantly clear that I have, now am, and always will be, a “Royalist”(it might have been a different story if I was born in the era of King Henry the eighth), but this is a different story. In England, & in most other Countries of the Commonwealth, even BEFORE the death of the Peoples’ Princess, Diana, British Royalty were going through many “Anni- horribiles”(as Queen Elizabeth described a particular one, ...

GREAT MESSAGE OF Sri Lanka’s NEW CHIEF JUSTICE – By Des Kelly   This was a lengthy, but most interesting article, sent to me by my good friend, Lankan/Aussie Maxwell Gerreyn, which, I am certain, will be enjoyed by everyone, & especially every Lankan patriot, wherever they are, in the World, today. I totally agree with Maxwell’s introduction to the piece, and totally also concur with every word spoken by Chief Justice H.N.J.Perera at the ceremonial “sitting” held on the 22nd of October, 2018. These, are indeed the words of a great man,  The new Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, and deservedly so. Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief)-eLanka “You must win by justice” Speech of His Lordship The Chief Justice H. N. J. Perera at the Ceremonial Sitting held on October 22, 2018. It is with humble gratitude that I receive the warm welcome, kind sentiments and expressions of confidence that you have ...

HAUNTING MEMORIES– By Des Kelly  “The Haunting of Hill-House”, a very recent “horror-movie” that is supposed to be so spooky, people are passing-out in fright, even as they watch this “flick”. What is this World coming to ?, I ask you. Nowadays, one does not have to spend money, going to theatres to watch these miserable films, only to go back home and, instead of making love, to some romantic music, go to bed, only to recapture these nightmarish movies in their dreams. Enough is enough. Even our television stations in Australia (and there are plenty of them, at the moment), seem to have forgotten all the beautiful, happy, musical-movies of days gone by, movies such as “Anchors Aweigh”, “The Jolson Story”, “Singing in the rain” and dozens of others of the same ilk, that leave viewers feeling at peace with the World. Instead, we have even the very young ...

A LESSON FOR LANKA – By Des Kelly   Photo Source: News.com.au “Breaking News” Ian Kiernan, a famous, former Australian of the year, Order of Australia Medal winner, Yachtsman, and all-round Gentleman, has just died of cancer at the age of 78. Millions of people around the World should remember him firstly, as the Founder of “Clean-up Australia” & later as “a shining example” to dozens of other like-minded Countries around our Planet, where it has become the custom to, not only clean-up the Land they live in, but also the Oceans that surround them.   It all started very simply. As a yachtsman, sailing around the World, Ian Kiernan could not help but notice all the rubbish strewn around the wide expanses of the Oceans he was sailing on. This unsightly garbage made him decide to firstly, make the effort to have the Seas around his great Wide Land ...

“PUNYA HEENDENIYA (A true legend of Sri Lanka) – By Des Kelly Dr.Upul Wijayawardhana, first & foremost, let me thank you Sir, for this most interesting story on Punya Heendeniya, a true legend of Sri Lanka, both as an actress & a person. For my readers of eLanka, although I do remember Henry Jayasena, the actor who once was also a “temporary-“boarder” at our home in Dehiwala. Sadly, he has also passed on. My recollections as regards the actors, and, more importantly, the actresses of that particular era, was that, although Henry was quite a handsome bloke, it is Rukmani Devi, the actress & “nightingale” of Ceylon, that I remember, to this very day. Rest in peace, Rukmani.      Punya Heendeniya  was “on-screen” much later, I suppose. Henry Jayasena would have been very proud to have this most beautiful & talented co-star work with him, but I was already in ...

“SRI LANKAN MOON” By Des Kelly This writer has been a long-time admirer of a bunch of guys calling themselves “The Mavericks”. They are still very much on the Showbiz scene in America, and, as a band, they are superb. Raul Malo, their “front-man” & lead vocalist is also a songwriter and has written many songs.      On one of their “albums” is a song with the title  “Amsterdam Moon”. Every other song on the album runs for 3 plus minutes, so I was at  loss to understand why the song I preferred (Amsterdam Moon) only lasts for 2 plus minutes. The best song, yet the shortest. I have tried to contact Raul, to no avail (he is probably on tour), so, while I give full credit to Raul Malo, who, I believe, is the composer of the song that I’ve played over & over again (I especially love ...
