DESMOND KELLY

“MURALLY YOUR’S” – By Des Kelly Matthew (Matt.)Adnate is the Artist who has just completed what is the tallest public housing “mural”, in Collingwood, Melbourne, actually, now, the tallest, most realistic “mural” as far as this wordsmith is concerned, in the Southern Hemisphere. There are thousands of these murals in the World, folks, but to finally see the finished product on television, yesterday, was something I did think, was fully worth writing about. Not only has this Artist accomplished a work that is absolutely superb in itself,  Matt has proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, that there are “others” who think that they are sending some foolish message in what is loosely termed “Art”, but is nothing more than graffiti, making their “canvases” ugly, & the wonderful City of Melbourne look third-rate, in the World.      Everywhere one looks, nowadays, graffiti hits the eye, but, while this is ...

THE APEX OF EVEREST – By Des Kelly This is where all high-cost “advertising” should be done. Let us take the up-coming Springtime Horse-racing event the Cox–Plate” for instance. It would be really great if someone with the necessary finances could organize a team of Mountain Climbers to accompany the Owners, Trainers, Grooms & Jockey of Winx, our World-champion Racehorse to the APEX of Mount Everest, in order to advertise the filming of this great race, via all the modern advertising & film technologies available to them at the moment. The T.A.B. will also be in a position to woo all our gamblers, most of whom would have a bet on two worms crawling up a wall, to see which one reaches the roof, first. Winx, of course, will win her 4th Cox Plate, making it her 29th straight win. I am hoping that her owners will have her behind ...

“VALE RONNIE LEACH” by Des Kelly Firstly, I echo the sentiments of the sad, but very interesting article in your paper, regarding Ronnie. It was indeed a superb eulogy of a really great guy who was always “the life of the party”, and, at the same time, a humble “down to earth” type, who loved everyone around him, and, in so doing, “inherited” the reciprocation of those who had the privilege of seeing “Thattaya” on stage or screen, and even more so, as my brother Ian & I did, in person. I remember meeting Ronnie many years ago, in Melbourne and I was struck by his humble attitude, even though he was already a household name in Lanka, at the time. Brother Ian, who lives in Sri Lanka, also loved this guy who was taken from us, far too early & together with each & every Lankan/Aussie plus every Sri ...

“FLY BUTTERFLY, FLY” – By Des Kelly The strangest things do happen in “Show-business”. It has been seventy six years or thereabouts since I have been a part of it, both in “old Ceylon” & now, Australia, where, try as I might, I have never been successful in the “selling” of any of my original “song-compositions” to any Aussie-Star in the recording field, not because THEY would not approve of them, (my songs are good enough), but, their “managements” do not even seem interested in acknowledging letters or e’mails forwarded to them.  This is a very bad, unprofessional attitude on the part of Australian “entertainment/managements”. Doesn’t happen in America or the Netherlands, I feel, & “the proof is in the pudding”, so to speak, as I now come to the unusual, but welcome attitude of a Dutch Country Singer by the name of Tony Kerr (an excellent “Country vocalist/guitarist”), who ...

MARVELLOUS MARIANS by Des Kelly Not too long ago, most Sinhalese Musicians & Bands would “do their thing” sitting and standing around as though the World was coming to an end, in the next few minutes of their “gig”. I would watch them in disbelief. Not a smile on the faces of these Sri Lankans, who are generally known to have a perpetual smile, nod their heads a lot, and act in a totally relaxed manner, common to Asian Islanders. It was not that these musicians had no talent. They simply did not know how to project this talent onto a television screen.   Another fault was the fact that most of their “vocalists” did not know the lyrics of the songs they were about to perform. They either had a piece of paper in their hands, did not even try to conceal the fact that they had to keep ...

“NEW BALL-GAME” – By Des Kelly    The football is over, done & dusted. West Australians are still celebrating their Grand Final Win, win over a hapless Collingwood A.F.L.team. As in nature, Eagles are certainly more powerful than Magpies, but it really does not matter. This”Grand-Final” was every bit of a thrilling game, from start to finish. The Maggie’s did make their opposition Eagles look very much like little Eaglets who had left their nests in Western Australia to come over to Melbourne (the big smoke), when, during the first quarter, they, those black & white tough little sods who tend to “dive-bomb” certain passers-by, without fear or favour, if they were foolish enough to walk close to, or under trees which housed their chicks, seemed to give the Eagles a football lesson. The rest is history, as they say. This  “footy-final” was one of the best matches I had ...

“THERE, I’VE SAID IT AGAIN” – By Des Kelly    The Country that is now Sri Lanka has changed almost beyond recognition these days. Now, mainly a “tourist attraction”, it is slowly, but surely, being “restructured” by China, the ulterior motive of this very clever, overpopulated Country being, that “taking-over” of this tiny, but hugely strategic Island would help them to “gain” 65.610 km of Land to add to their enormous Empire, (a Land of 9 million, 596 thousand & 261 kilometres). Lanka is blessed with too many attributes for me to list, without writing a tome about them. China, like Portugal, Holland & Britain, in the past, has it’s eyes on the little tear-drop of India, and it’s only a matter of time, folks, only a matter of time. Pardon me for saying this ” Over & over again”.      Yes, Sri Lanka has changed. Basically, back in ...

“No-one will ever know” – BY Des Kelly   No-one will ever know(and that’s a fact), exactly when the song was written by Mel Foree (music), & Fred Rose (lyrics), but it was certainly before the early 1950’s, and was associated with the Country Music Icon, at the time, one who everyone knows as Hank Williams Senior, when it was posthumously delivered as a “single” in 1957.  Another Country Singer, Roy Acuff was actually the first to record this great Country love song, but it was “covered” by no less than 20 artistes, both as a pop-song & Country Ballad.       The reason for this story is simply this. It is a beautiful song, released for our eLanka readers, featuring my “pick” of the BEST versions by both male & female “Stars”, plus the fact that I did write a similar Country song during the 70’s, substituting just one word ...

“GOODBYE RONNIE” By Des Kelly  A favourite singer, stage performer & actor, born in Ceylon on the 19th of October 1953, Christened Ronnie Luke Leach, but fondly known as “Thataya” has now gone on what is termed his “antheema-gamana”(final journey) to his stage in the sky. What can I say about Ronnie that is not already known by every Sri Lankan of his particular era (1953-2018). He passed away in Perth, Australia, (on tour), of a sudden cardiac attack, immediately after doing what he loved to do, performing for his Lankan/Aussie fans, at 65 years of age, on the 1st of October, 2018.       I had the privilege of meeting Ronnie personally, when he came to Melbourne on a previous tour, many years ago. He impressed me, immediately, as a humble, down-to-earth guy, who had already made a huge name for himself, not only singing solo, recording, acting in ...
