A migrant’s story – By Ron Pieris I was preparing to migrate to Sydney from Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1974. I was invited to a home in Moratuwa for a meal. I remember it was a sunny day in the summer of ‘74. I took a bus from Bambalapitiya to Moratuwa and walked down to my friend’s home. I was greeted at the entrance by his wife and children who warmly welcomed me. After a bit of small talk, I was requested to move to the dining room. This was a Sinhalese family from the provinces. I noticed that on the dining table was placed a bowl of rice with a saucer for serving and three vegetable curries, and on the centre of the table was placed a single egg. We all served food onto our plates. And all of those present were staring at the egg! I was ...

Most Australians wrong about total savings required for comfortable retirement, expert says – by Emma Wynne Source:abc.net.au Confusion about how much in savings and superannuation is really needed to sustain a long period in retirement means many people are unnecessarily anxious and not making the most of their money, research has found. Super Consumers Australia, which is attached to consumer organisation Choice, researched retirement incomes. SCA director Xavier O’Halloran told Geoff Hutchison on ABC Radio Perth they found many people believed they needed $1 million in savings to have a truly comfortable retirement. “When we reviewed a lot of the commentary on how much you need to save for retirement, we see this figure coming up a lot. It’s often from groups or individuals that might have a self-interest in you having more and more savings,” he said. “They are all, of course, clipping your ticket in fees for managing that money, so ...

“CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET” – by Des Kelly The game is on again. Cricket in once again the flavour of the month in many Countries. Australia has just won the “ashes”, beating the blokes from old Blighty fair & square, yet, how many of our good old Sri Lankans remember when the top West-Indians, after beating Australia, visited, to play an exhibition match against the side who had also beaten Australia to become the grand-finalists of that particular era ithe 50s. The Ceylon Cricket Team WON this World Series match, playing not only on a different pitch, but also against an Umpire who signalled that our Murali was “chucking” and not bowling correctly. Could you believe this !!??. Anyway, to get back to this particular story, I was in the Royal Ceylon Navy, when the West Indians arrived to play this “friendly” match against Arjuna Ranatunga & his team, and tickets ...

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC –  By – Algi Wijewickrema When you have an email address like “noproblemperera” I’m sure you readers would expect an out of the ordinary person. Out of the ordinary is an understatement really for arguably Sri Lanka’s most versatile and entertaining musician. He is the leader of a band that is not only popular among Sri Lankans living here but also popular with Sri Lankans abroad. He is none other than the leader of the “Gypsies”, Sunil Perera. When I visited Sunil at his studio in Ratmalana where their family business has existed for decades, he was ready to accommodate us but the interview was inevitably disturbed by many telephone calls that kept coming which to me proves how busy this man can still be and how the popularity of Gypsies has not diminished. Beginning with his school days at St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, Sunil ...

“THE LUCKY COUNTRY”??.,    (I THINK SO)!!.       Many thousands of Sri Lankans, among others, have made this Island Continent their second home, yet, not too many know very much about this great sunburnt Land, causing my friend Maxie Gerreyn to send in an interesting resume’ of the Land Down Under, as Australia is fondly referred to, by many of us. They say that learning is a womb to tomb affair, so I am very happy to  “air this affair” so that all Sri Lankans especially, will now understand just a bit more about their “Stepmother Country”, as I like to call Australia, with the deepest respect.  Desmond Kelly. Today’s combined effort augurs well and hopefully finds similar events in our motherland. We are all siblings of one mother, we have our sibling rivalries, ‘I can run faster than my brother, I ‘am better than my sister at mathematics, I ‘am prettier than my elder sister’ but when it comes to celebrating the mother’s birthday, they all get together in baking the cake and preparing the food, and all join in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ ...
